One of the responsibilities of the Union Parishad is to ensure the safety of the rural people and their goods. Each Union Parishad has appointed Mohalladar and Dafadar to perform this duty.The work of Mohalladars and Dafadars is to arrange vigilance in the villages and Mohallas of the Union and to help the police as much as possible in suppressing crime.If any suspicious person or any situation arises which may disturb the peace in the union, the Mohalladar and Dafadar shall inform the OC of the police station and report to him at least once in 15 days. If there is any apprehension of any kind of epidemic in the Union or if there is any possibility of damage to any dam or irrigation project or if any property of the Union Parishad is wrongfully occupied, the Union Parishad should be informed immediately.Moreover, in case of damage to railway lines, telephone or telegram or electric lines, tube wells and other public property, the public or Mohalladar and Dafadar will inform the Union Parishad. Accordingly, the Union Parishad will inform the authorities concerned. In some cases, Mohalladars and Dafadars can make arrests without the order and warrant of the Magistrate, for example, if someone commits an offense not punishable by any court,Or someone has any seedel machine or stolen goods or someone escapes from Hajat and hides in the village etc. But they should be handed over to the police station as soon as possible. Besides, one of the main functions of Mohalladar is to register births and deaths.
